2. One-China policy key to cross-Straits relations

Chief of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the Chinese State Council, Wang Yi, recently visits San Francisco and Los angles in the United States and meets with overseas Chinese representatives.

Wang said, during the past year, the Chinese mainland and Taiwan have developed their ties under the spirit of "building trust, laying aside disputes, seeking consensus by shelving differences, and creating a win-win situation," which has been widely recognized and accepted by people from both sides.

While mutual trust is the key to and basis for the cross-Straits ties, the core of such mutual trust between the two sides lies in the adherence to the framework of both the Chinese mainland and Taiwan belonging to one China and cross-Straits relations should develop within the framework of the one-China policy. Such an approach has proved effective as evidenced by the positive development of cross-Straits relations in recent months. The Chinese mainland and Taiwan should stick to the approach when tackling sensitive and complicated issues in the future.

Wang noted that the more the cross-Straits ties progress, the deeper the mutual political trust between the two sides should be, thus the relations can stabilize and last long.

About 35 leaders of the local Chinese-American community, mostly immigrants from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan, attended the meeting and expressed their satisfaction over the significant progress of the cross-Straits relations during the past year.

3. Violence-torn Xinjiang plods forward into recovery

On July 5, highly violent crimes involving beating, smashing, looting and arson took place in Urumqi, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. A large number of innocent civilians and armed policemen were killed and many others were injured. Facts have fully shown that these are premeditated and organized crimes of violence, directed and instigated by separatists aboard and organized and carried out by separatists inside the country. The World Uyghur Congress headed by the ethnic separatist Rebiya Kadeer directly instigated, orchestrated, directed and staged these highly violent crimes. The World Uyghur Congress incited troublemakers through the internet and other channels to "be braver" and "to do something big". Rebiya Kadeer clamored for "a big event in Urumqi on July 5" and urged people to "follow closely the developments and collect relevant information".

According to figures so far, 1680 people were injured and 184 killed, including 46 Uyghurs. To protect people's life and property and safeguard law and order in Urumqi, the government of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region speedily deployed police to those places where the situation was grave. The police acted resolutely in accordance with the law. Now, transport and public order in Urumqi have now returned to normal. History has repeatedly shown that stability is a blessing and chaos is disaster. Without stability, nothing is possible in Xinjiang. The Chinese Government is unequivocally against ethnic separatism, violence and terrorism. Unity among people of all ethnic groups, social harmony and stability represent the highest interests of the Chinese nation, the 21 million people of all ethnic group in Xinjiang included.
