On behalf of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Federated States of Micronesia, and in his own name, Ambassador Wu Wei extended his deep condolences and sympathies to the family of H.E. John R. Haglelgam, the former President of the FSM and President of the Micronesia-China Friendship Association (MCFA).
In the letter of condolence, Ambassador Wu said that the late President Haglelgam is one of the FSM’s most distinguished leaders who made significant contributions to the FSM’s independence and development and made lifelong contributions to the service of the nation with excellent leadership, great academic enthusiasm and a profound love for the people.
President Haglelgam is a good and old friend of the Chinese people who actively pushed forward the development of China-FSM relations and people-to-people friendship. During his presidency, President Haglelgam made the strategic decision with visionary wisdom to establish diplomatic ties between China and the FSM in 1989 and became the first president of the FSM to pay state visit to China in 1990, opening a new historical chapter of China-FSM bilateral relations. After leaving office, President Haglelgam established the MCFA and dedicated himself to the people’s wellbeing of both countries, playing a unique and constructive role in promoting the steady and sound development of bilateral relations. President Haglelgam will always be remembered and missed by the Chinese people.
China stands ready to work with the FSM to carry forward the cause of friendship between the two peoples and promote the sound and steady development of China-FSM Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, so as to better benefit the two countries and the two peoples.
