Chinese Embassy in FSM Provides Donation to Island Food Community

On December 3rd, 2021, the Chinese Embassy in the FSM held the handover ceremony of a batch of flour-milling machines donated by China to the Island Food Community. H.E. Huang Zheng, Chinese Ambassador to the FSM, and his wife Mrs. Zhao Yingguang, FSM’s First Lady Patricia Edwin, the Likend Madolenimw Mer Hebel, Mrs. Emihner Johnson, Director of  the Island Food Community,  Mr. Kalvin Ehmes, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Asian Affairs in the FSM Department of Foreign Affairs, as well as representatives from local women’s cultural groups, among others, were present. 

Prior to the ceremony, Ambassador Huang met with First Lady Edwin and her party. 

Mrs. Zhao, in  her remarks, elaborated on China’s poverty elimination achievements, the foreign aid philosophy of “Teaching one to fish is better than giving one fish”, and the traditional Chinese culture of “Food is the primary necessity of the people.” Mrs. Zhao pointed out that, in recent years, First Lady Edwin and the Island Food Community have been vigorously promoting the initiative of planting and eating local food, through which local people are encouraged to cultivate and consume indigenous crops. Mrs.Zhao said that, it is of significance for preserving islands culture, safeguarding public health, protecting marine environment, maintaining food security, advancing sustainable economic development, as well as addressing such issues as climate change, environmental pollution and food crisis. Mrs. Zhao noted that, the Chinese side highly commended these efforts. This donation of flour-milling machines is a concrete measure China has taken to show its support. It is hoped that these machines will enhance FSM people’s capacity of dealing with challenges, so as to help them lead more self-reliant, resilient, and healthy lives. Mrs. Zhao also expressed her good wishes for closer China-FSM people-to-people exchanges and friendly relations. 

In her remarks, Mrs. Johnson, Director of  the Island Food Community, sincerely thanked the Chinese government and Chinese people for the long-term sincere and selfless assistance to the FSM people and highly appreciated Chinese Embassy’s positive, rapid and effective response to the request from her organization. Mrs. Johnson said that they will make good use of these machines, bring real benefits to local communities, and make positive contribution to the in-depth development of China-FSM “Great Friendship” . 

On the scene, ladies from local women’s cultural groups sang traditional songs to express their gratitude. Chinese Embassy staff members demonstrated how the machine works and the guests also enjoyed some traditional Chinese refreshments.
