President Emanuel Mori Paid a State Visit to China

At the invitation of H.E. President HU Jintao of the People's Republic of China, H.E. President Emanuel Mori of the Federated States of Micronesia paid his first state visit to China from December 16th to 22nd, 2007.

President HU Jintao held official talks with President Mori

On December 20th, Chinese President HU Jintao hosted welcoming ceremony in honor of visiting FSM President Emanuel Mori at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, followed by official talks between the two presidents.

HU Jintao highlighted the development of bilateral relations since the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and FSM in 1989, with continuous exchanges of high level visits, ever deepening mutual trust in political affairs, remarkable achievements in a broad range of exchanges and cooperation, including economy, trade, and others, and close contacts and joint efforts on regional and global affairs. He also expressed his appreciation to the importance FSM attached to the ties with China and the newly set-up Government's adherence to the one-China policy and China's great cause of peaceful reunification.

'China-FSM relations have already entered into an important stage of development,' said President HU Jintao, 'The two countries should fortify political mutual trust, economic cooperation and development in the world.' China vowed to boost bilateral relations with FSM, proposing to cement two-way cooperation in areas such as trade, fisheries, public health, sports and tourism.

President Mori said FSM-China relations were found on the basis of mutual respect. FSM would continue its efforts to work closer with China in the areas of transportation, clean energy, fisheries and private business.

He also stressed that the one-China policy composed the basis of FSM's foreign policy and his country would unswervingly stick to it.

The two heads of the states also attended a signing ceremony of a bilateral agreement on economic and technological cooperation.

Premier WEN Jiabao met with President Mori

On December 21st, Chinese Premier WEN Jiabao told visiting FSM President Emanuel Mori that China is ready to strengthen cooperation with FSM in various fields. The meeting was at Ziguangge, Zhongnanhai.

WEN said that the Chinese Government attaches great importance to China-FSM relationship and see FSM as a good friend and good partner. He said China is ready to make joint efforts to deepen bilateral cooperation in various fields including economy and trade, culture, education and health, in a bid to continuously promote the development of China-FSM friendly and cooperative ties featuring lasting stability and mutual benefits.

"Facts have shown the friendly ties between China and FSM are in the common interests of both peoples and also conductive to peace and prosperity in the region of the Pacific islands," WEN added.

He expressed his appreciation of the FSM Government's long adherence to the one-China policy and opposition to "Taiwan independence".

Mori said the friendly relationship between FSM and China has developed smoothly, and the two sides have developed successful cooperation in the fields of communication, energy, agriculture, fishery, trade and tourism, which has helped strengthen FSM's ability of national construction. He said FSM hopes to learn from China's experiences of development and continuously strengthen cooperation with China, adding his appreciation of China's innovative cooperation with south Pacific island nations.

Mori also reiterated that FSM will firmly adhere to the one-China policy.

On December 21st, FSM opened its embassy in China, over 18 years after the two countries established their diplomatic relations. Visiting FSM President Emanuel Mori attended the opening ceremony in Beijing.

From December 16th to 19th, FSM President Emanuel Mori toured Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Yiwu, Jiashan County and Shanghai, where he visited aero-technology manufacture and solar technique enterprises, Yiwu International Commodities Fair and bio-gas project site.
